Discovered by Czech researchers, the botnet has been spreading by taking advantage of poorly configured routers and DSL modems, according to Jan Vykopal, the head of the network security department with Masaryk University’s Institute of Computer Science in Brno, Czech Republic.

The malware got the Chuck Norris moniker from a programmer’s Italian comment in its source code: “in nome di Chuck Norris,” which means “in the name of Chuck Norris.” Norris is a U.S. actor best known for his martial arts films such as “The Way of the Dragon” and “Missing in Action.”

Security experts say that various types of botnets have infected millions of computers worldwide to date, but Chuck Norris is unusual in that it infects DSL modems and routers rather than PCs.

It installs itself on routers and modems by guessing default administrative passwords and taking advantage of the fact that many devices are configured to allow remote access. It also exploits a known vulnerability in D-Link Systems devices, Vykopal said in an e-mail interview.

After a little investigation i realised it was a loose connection to the inverter card.

So firstly unplug the battery and remove the power supply.

Prize the little rubber stoppers from the corners of the laptop and top of the laptop and you should reveal between 4-6 screws.

Undo the screws and prize the cover loose gently.

It should look something like this with the cover off.

In the next photo you will see the inverter with the socket where you can see that i have selotaped the plug to the socket. Before selotaping the socket to the plug remove the plug and plug back into the socket. You should do this about ten times. You will notice that in the photos i have the machine running. You shouldn’t unplug and plug back in whilst the machine is turned on. I have simply turned it on to check that the machine is doing as it is supposed to after the repair. Here’s the next photo with the selotape in place.

Once done put the cover pack on and the screws back in and then put the rubber stoppers back on and your done should be stable.

Install the MSVC redistributable manually by going to the link below and and downloading it from micro$oft.

Then install AVG and hey presto puff all done….

In some cases Malware Defense comes with trojan-rootkit that blocks anti-virus software and MalwareBytes too. You should remove Trojans first. To do this, you can downlaod TDSSKiller tool from http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip
Then run a full system scan with MalwareBytes anti-malware or SUPERAntispyware. Good luck!

Great utility found the little sod and made Malware Defence show itself so that i could use MalwareBytes to remove it result!

I tried downloading another copy of Malwarebytes and re-installing it, thinking I got a bad file, but I just got the same error.  Doing a quick google search led me to the bleepingcomputer.com forum.  I guess that error means that visual basic is damaged.  How it got damaged is beyond me, but it’s a pretty easy solution.  Be sure to uninstall Malwarebytes first.  Then all you have to do is download and install service pack 6 for visual basic 6.0.  Install Mbam again after that is finished.  *Poof*, all fixed.

Before you do anything else, you’re going to need to fix the internet connection to work, because Antivirus Live changes IE to use a fake proxy server that prevents you from getting to anything else—and will also prevent you from installing and updating a real anti-malware software.

So go to start then click on control panel. Then click on Internet Options this should bring up a box with some tabs across the top.  Click on Local Area Settings. You should see something similar to the image below.

Now Where you see a tick in the proxy server boxes untick both of them.

Now you’ll want to download and install SuperAntiSpyware, Follow this link to get it here,

Once you load it up, it’s going to do some analysis… let it do that and then you should see this.

Click on Scan your computer and select your C drive when asked what to scan. Do a complete scan of your computer.

This then will after a while return the results to you something like this.

Click ok and the click next and follow the on screen instructions for removing the problems detected.

Once this is all done restart your computer and go back into safe mode with networking by pressing the f8 key again and selecting safemode with networking.

Now go here and download the free version MalwareBytes. Follow the on screen instructions to install it. Once installed you should see something like below.

Now click on Perform Full Scan.

Allow this to complete and you should see something like the below…

Now Click on Remove Selected.

This will then ask you to restart your computer in order to complete the removal process.

Job done restart and carry on as normal

I keep promising myself that i should add more content but keep telling myself that i dont get the time. Well the time has come that is going to change that. I used to simply write my blog post straight into the word press writer and send it off to the blog… well no more…

I have decided this week after losing some important data through a power cut using word that i would use google docs and see how that goes working from the cloud.This also means i can type directly my thoughts without fear of losing data. I know about the draft mode and all that but cmon i want everything in one place.

Google seems to have it all going on at the moment. I’m liking also that i can upload documents to the site. There were rumours of the vault a long time ago. But they just bolted it into docs without any fanfare and I like that.

So I look forward to providing some content that you can read and keep coming back to for more and more. Hopefully reviving this stagnant blog.

Thoughts about what my next post will be about….virus removal guides…. hmmm some kewl gadget…. who knows….
